Cross-Checking a Launch Monitor Read by Hand
A launch monitor is excellent at what it does. What it does not do is tell you why a number looks the way it does.
Modern launch monitors are genuinely accurate at capturing ball speed, spin, and launch conditions. What they can't do is explain the cause behind an unusual reading — a spike in side spin could mean a face-angle issue, a path issue, an off-center strike, or a shaft that's flexing inconsistently. The monitor reports the symptom; figuring out the cause is still a hands-on job.
Where the Hand Check Comes In
When a number looks off, we check impact tape for strike location, look at the shaft's grain orientation, and physically inspect the grip for wear or slickness before assuming the reading reflects the golfer's swing. More often than a golfer expects, the culprit turns out to be equipment, not technique.
A Real Example
A recent iron fitting showed unusually high side spin on the 6-iron specifically, out of step with the rest of the set. Impact tape showed a slightly toe-heavy strike pattern — not a swing flaw, but a lie angle that had drifted upright on that one club after a previous repair elsewhere. A quick bend on the bench closed the gap immediately.
The launch monitor flagged the symptom. Finding the actual cause took a strip of impact tape and about ninety seconds with a lie-and-loft machine.
Why This Matters for a Recommendation
A recommendation built purely off launch-monitor output risks recommending a fix for the wrong problem — a new shaft when the real issue was a bent hosel, for instance. Cross-checking by hand before finalizing a build keeps that kind of misdiagnosis from happening.
